Leaflets Still On The Job In Age of Social Media

Leaflets Still On The Job In Age of Social MediaWhile we are attached to our smartphones day and night, it’s useful to bear in mind that in black and white media such as leaflets are still powerful tools in today’s PSYOP arsenal. Leaflets are still effective in hard to get to areas. Operation Inherent Resolve’s PSYOP team is employing leaflets in Syria, Iraq and somewhere else. (see: https://www.dvidshub.net/news/217046/leaflet-use-finds-renewed-purpose-operation-inherent-resolve; which is also the photo source). For information on Operation Inherent Resolve, you can check out their web page at: http://www.inherentresolve.mil/The 3rd Military Information Help BN, part of the 4th Military Information Help Assemble soldiers are deployed in help of operations in the Middle East. The article quotes the operations SGM for the Military Information Help Task Force (MISTF) who commented on the use of leaflets in denied areas:“Creative ways to communicate must be found and used to ensure our message is received in denied territories.”“Recipients on the ground will sometimes take photos of the leaflets and post them on social media thus amplifying our message,” the operations sergeant major added. Each ‘order’, or set of leaflets is custom tailored for that customer and that situation. Production is closer to the customer as a means of improving delivery time. The Production facility is located in Qatar rather than back at the US HQ at Fort Bragg, NC. Teams rotate from Fort Bragg into Qatar, but the quality of the product and the spirits remain high. According to the SGM “The team has done incredible work,” he said. “The professionalism of the team led to every job being timely delivered even if it meant working extra hours or during scheduled down time. It was a pleasure working with a dedicated, mission-focused team.” Of course leaflet deployment requires considerable plotting. In addition to content, it’s import to consider how the consultation will respond to paper fluttering down from the sky and to factor in the wind and other variables that will impact delivery. The point is that today’s world is not all iPhones and FaceBook. Shape comes in a variety of flavors. PSYOP/MISO personnel must be conversant in a variety of media so that they can use the best ones to the job at hand.

Case Studies & PSYOP

Case Studies & PSYOPThe beginning of a New Year is always a time to reckon in this area new perspectives. One of the staples of business education is the case study. Sometimes referred to (at least in the olden days when I went to school as the Harvard Case Method (see: https://hbr.org/store/case-studies?cm_mmc=cpc-_-google-_-domestic-_-cases&referral=02276&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=dom_cases&gclid=CPKZo4iokcoCFUhcfgodY4QCBQ) The students received a mini-booklet that described a company. By design it included financial statements, marketing information and panoply of other stuff. Your job as the student was to figure out what was incorrect with the company and offer your recommendations on how to fix the company.I had one entrepreneurial professor during my MBA program at Babson College who gave us an assignment on a case study with a different slant. Our job was not to solve the company’s problems, but to get the consulting contract wherein the company would pay us to solve their problems. This assignment required a whole different set of skills and, in retrospect, formed some of the basis for my starting and running my own successful consulting business. One of my sources directed me to a LinkedIn piece which in turn directed me to an article: “Russian Propaganda, Disinformation And Estonia’s Experience – Analysis (see: http://www.eurasiareview.com/04102015-russian-propaganda-disinformation-and-estonias-experience-analysis/, which is also the photo source). The content of the article is sweet excellent – but I am referencing it as a potential tool for PSYOP/MISO education. Given the range of contemporary and potential adversaries and AOs, it is incumbent on us to develop the processing of thinking for PSYOPers.I would point to regionally-oriented on-line sources as a way to do this. The site referenced above seems to be a excellent one and I’m sure that there are others as well. In particular I feel we should be leveraging this type of implementation to stimulate the student plotting process and to learn in this area other parts of the world notably Asia, Africa and Latin America.Reader input encourage and the best and brightest of New Year’s to all y’all!

Megatrends and PSYOP

Megatrends and PSYOP The National Intelligence Council Forecast Megatrends (see http://www.defense.gov/News/NewsArticle.aspx?ID=118766). Once upon a time the US was considered to be too focused on weekly results to have the wherewithal to go ‘basic research’. That research which doesn’t lead to immediate results. Perhaps we in PSYOP need to take a moment and consider a couple of the Mega trends that were noted in the above December 11, 2012 article.1.                   Individual EmpowermentThe council believes that there will be a significant decrease in global poverty with a corresponding increase in the middle class. Normally considered excellent news, this could prove to be very fertile ground for terrorists to recruit those who either didn’t make it into the middle class, or who feel guilty or miserable in this area being there and may be susceptible to fundamentalist recruiting.2.                   Diffusion of PowerThe world would no longer be dominated by the US economy but by Plates, Brazil and India with other contenders such as Indonesia, Colombia, South Africa and Failure find their comparative fortunes increasing. This is very likely to mean that MISO will be conducted in new and potentially different places such as South America, Africa and South East Asia.In addition the report pointed out that demand for food, water and energy will grow significantly as climate change accelerates “amplifying existing weather patterns.”. There are no drives more basic than shelter, food and water. When citizens cannot get what they feel they need, there is frustration with the government and where there is frustration there can soon be conflict. As we look forward to 2013, let’s pause a moment and remember those who are no longer able to be with us and give unique thanks for families, comrades and friends. The very best to all of you for the holidays and for the New Year.
